Okay, 29 lbs in my pack plus an 8 lb day pack….but keeping it under 30 lbs makes me feel better about life.

…and I’m taking the cat! Just kidding.
I’m packed and head to Atlanta tomorrow! I’ll spend the weekend with my sister who lives there and then head to launch on Monday! What is launch you ask? I’ll find out next week I guess, but I will be meeting up with my squad (the 40-50ish people going to the same countries, but don’t worry, we’re divided up into smaller teams as well) at a hotel in Atlanta for a few more days of training and preparation and then we will leave the country January 9th!
I remember back in college telling some friends that a life goal of mine was to be able to fit everything I own in the trunk of my car….I got a lot of laughs. Funniest thing was that I was serious. However, I never dreamed that I would actually live out of a 58 liter backpack for 11 months. I spent hours upon hours packing, questioning the realistic use and functionality of everything I packed, initialing everything, and consistently reminding myself that other people live where I’m going. They somehow survive, so if I forget something, I’ll find it there or make do. But for real, when you have to carry everything you pack for 11 months, you don’t want to overdo it (or at least I don’t!). I mean, I know I’m strong and all, but I don’t want to show off too much with a huge heavy pack…or break my back.
C.S. Lewis once said, “Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose.” For me, that puts things in perspective of what really matters, and I have a feeling I’m going to be learning a lot more about that on the world race. In Philippians 4:11-13 Paul writes about how he has learned to be content no matter what his circumstance because of who God is in his life; I’m hoping to be able to say the same and learn to have that deep dependence on the Lord.
I’m excited to see what life is like without so many distractions.
I’m excited to see what God has in store, because I surely have no idea.
I’m excited (and nervous) to do whatever is asked of me in the ministries we will be a part of.
I’m eager to serve alongside the 6 other wonderful women on my team and get to know them better.
I’m interested to see who I will be by the end of it all. But then again I guess that’s life, always changing us!
Live well,
Crystal
