The spoken word has great power. Power to influence, power to encourage, and power to destroy. The words you speak not only influence your life but they feed others as well, weather they are good or bad. Proverbs 18:21 says “death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
One of the most powerful things we as the human race have is our ability to speak. Our use of words sets us apart from all other living creatures. The Lord has gifted us with something amazing, and so often we don’t use our gifting properly.
Instead we use our words to bash others, to complain, to gossip, to speak hatred, or to even put ourselves down. The sad thing is we are more likely to grip onto the negative words people speak about us. If we have the power of death and life in our words, how then do you think we should use our words? Our negative words bring death, but when we speak to edify each other we bring life.
Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
In a world that seems to be more negative than positive, we need to remember the power that our words hold. We need to be encouragers in a world of people who seek to break others down. The words you speak hold so much power for your own life and for the life of others.
Over the course of the last six months or so I was praying that the Lord would give me spiritual eyes to see. What I didn’t realize was that He already did. I don’t see people like most of the world see’s people. I never have. Rarely do I look at somebody and see fault, but I look at them and see the good and encourage that side of them. I speak life.
If you are in a relationship where you are constantly told you are not good enough, then that is what you will start to believe. If you constantly tell yourself you’re a failure then you will get locked in that mindset and not attempt to try anything. It is the same way with kids. A child has no clear picture of himself so he believes what others say about him. If a child is told repeatedly that he is bad, or is lazy, or no good, or stupid, or shy, or clumsy, he will act out those things that have been reinforced through those words.
Remember the power that your words hold.
Are you speaking life, or causing death?
Matthew 15:18
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
Proverbs 12:18
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
