Unsung Hero (n.):
Men and women who are dedicated to serving some of the most impoverished populations in the world, yet rarely receive recognition for their dedication and service. These givers may also live with meager conditions but give consistently from an abundance of God’s love. Their names may not be in history books, their acts unknown to the rest of the world, while unrecognized, they shake a generation and move a culture, and ultimately build the Kingdom.
After doing Unsung Heroes this month in Thailand, I can say my faith has been made stronger. My confidence has grown beyond my wildest dreams. I’ve experienced the Holy Spirit like never before. I’ve asked The Lord questions and He’s answered. He’s shown my team certain words and pictures. He hasn’t left us in the wondering of what these things meant. He’s pieced it all together in His perfect timing.
Come with me, as I share stories of this month and how The Lord has showed up in every situation. He’s allowed us to come in contact with unsung heroes.
We were walking towards the RedLight District in Bangkok. Everyone had passed this lady, she had only one eye, but she was blind in this eye making it useless to her. She was playing music from a box around her neck, with one hand in a bowl simply waiting for donations to help provide for herself.
Chrislyn, Sarah, Bella, Danielle, and I all felt prompted to pray for her or just speak truth over her. We stopped and talked for a minute. Chrislyn asked if anyone had anything that The Lord had put on their heart. I slowly turned my head to the right and just looked at her. I instantly had this compassion and love come over me. The word beautiful kept flashing in front of me. I said, “We need to tell her she is beautiful.”
Tears. Hot steamy tears. Ran down my face as those words left my mouth. I was caught off guard.
Chrislyn said, “Court, that’s the Holy Spirit working. I think you should go tell her that.”
I walked over to this sweet lady and told her those precious words from The Lord. That our Father thinks she is beautiful and delights in her. This lady didn’t speak English, but in that moment I believe that The Lord spoke directly to her heart. I knew she understood me. She smiled so big and reached out to hug me.
This precious lady who was blind and had people walk all over her because of her circumstance reached out to hug ME.
She was blind and hugged a complete stranger.
God used me that day to reach out to this lady who is unseen and to remind her of the Fathers love. To remind her that she is beautiful and He delights in her.
We spent the morning together as a team in prayer. We asked The Lord to speak to us. He gave us pictures and words: a picture of a bike, birds flying, and a cowboy hat. He gave us one word that we didn’t really understand: shark.
Little did we know that He was leading us to something.
A few nights later, Chrislyn, Susan, Alicia, and Bella went out with our contact named Kelly. They ventured to the RedLight District once again. They walked down the street Soi Cowboy. (Remember the cowboy hat?) As they were walking, every single one of them was directed to one specific girl standing alone in a bar.
They all realized that this girl caught their eye. They turned around and entered the bar. Chrislyn looked up and there it was.
Shark. In bright green neon letters.
As they stood there, they blocked the door for anyone else to be able to go in.
God was using them that night in more ways than one.
He used them so that Kelly could build a relationship with those girls. The bar mom even asked for English lessons. Kelly said yes, but that it would be through bible stories. He used them so they could show His love to those girls in that bar.
God speaks through words if we just take the time to ask and listen.
My team split up going from a team a eight to a team of five. The three married women met up with their husbands and headed up North. We took a train down south to the beautiful city of Phuket.
We didn’t know where The Lord was going to lead us. I started to get discouraged and wondered why He had led us down here. After looking online for churches and organizations we could get in contact with, we decided to walk around town. We found a church that was founded by a Chinese couple over 100 years ago.
We have the privilege to join this Thai church and attended their bible study. They had a translator specially for us. We sang hymns and talked about Jesus together. They asked us questions of what we were doing and prayed for us.
They prayed for us.
We went there wanting to bless them and walked away being blessed.
We walked away feeling so much joy! Our hearts were so happy that night. We got to see our sisters in Christ, in another language, across the world, worship Jesus and learn more about who He is!
There’s no place I’d rather be than in the midst of Gods will, the center of His love, and His presence. This month taught me to step out in my faith. To be brave. To allow God to move and speak to us when we have no direction.
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Today, step out in faith. Have confidance and be brave to do whatever the Lord is asking of you.
