S-21. One of hundreds of prisons across Cambodia where people were tortured by the Khmer Rouge. Tens of thousands of people were imprisoned here. There were only 12 survivors.
Buildings: this was one of four here at Toul Sleng. Here’s where thousands of people were imprisoned, tortured, interrogated and killed.
Interrogation Rooms: the beds were used for torture, for interrogation on confessions that weren’t true, to humiliate and dehumanize people. These rooms were where their identity was lost.
Faces: young and old. Mothers. Fathers. Brothers. Sisters. The rooms and rooms of faces. Their eyes. There’s something in seeing their eyes, the fear, the pain, how emotionless they are. What thoughts were going through their head.
The Cells: where so many lived. Chained to the floor, unable to move in fear of being beat. Unable to cry out the pain. The bloodstained floors. Scared. Hurt. Brainwashed. Emotionless. Humiliated.
Let’s not forget places like this.
