This was written a few days before I launched for the Race. We’ve safely made it to Bolivia, and i’ll update about that soon!

Yes. You read that correctly. TSA locks.

I’ve been told by multiple sources that TSA locks are a necessity for the race.

So I added them to my list of approximately 693952 things I needed. No
big deal.

I picked some up at REI.

I then moseyed around target continuing down my list and then I hit the
section with locks….25 minutes later, I was still there. No
exaggeration. They were cheaper than what I paid at REI..so why not look?! Keys or number locks. TSA locks or regular? Do I want colors? Or all black? Matching? Cable wire locks or no? What size? And the options could go on forever.

I came home that day with 9 locks. $86 later. So much time and energy
wasted. And I still don’t even know what I’m going to use.

It was at coffee this morning with one of my supporters that I
realized…..this little situation was symbolic of my life. So many decisions. So many choices. So many distractions. So much energy and time and money focused on the wrong things.

This explains my upcoming journey so well. No wonder the World Race
doesn’t inundate us racers with details and logistics. No wonder we
are only “allowed” to bring a backpack and a “daypack” (aka smaller
backpack) for the year. No wonder we are told to be mindful of
communication with home and our use of electronics.

My goal for this year is to live in the present…to find glimmers of
goodness in the mundane…to live intentionally..to appreciate
simplicity and learn how to live when Jesus is at the center of it
all..free of distractions and clutter.
