school days. This is more than double the days I’ve subbed so far this school
year. I’ve been to all 3 schools (Elementary, Middle and High School) but have
spent most of my time in Elementary. My favorite was my 3 days in 3rd
grade. I learned the students’ names and routines; it felt great to know what
to expect when I arrived each morning. The ladies in the office greet me by
name and I’ve made friends at the staff lunch tables. It feels great to be a
part of the school.

Of
course, working with kids this week has provided me with some funny situations
and quotes. While subbing in 1st grade I told a story about teaching
in Kenya, Africa. The moment I finished, a girl gleefully asked, “Can you tell
it again?!” This was followed by
practically every kid in the class wanting to share a story that in their mind
was clearly related, but in reality strayed further and further off topic. It
was a good thing we had finished their Reading early and had some time before
lunch.
While
substitute teaching 11th and 12th grade Science, I started
class by introducing myself and asking the students to take out their homework.
A student turned to the kid next to him and said, “Wow, she is already way
better than our sub yesterday. We’re not going to get away with anything.” I
guess even high school students can’t help honestly saying what’s on their mind
sometimes.
Monday
is a “No School” day and I plan to go to REI with my Grandma to get my backpack
and look at other gear for my World Race. It’s hard to believe it is coming up
in about 8 weeks!
