We are nearing the end of our time in Nkhotakota, and I’ve started
reflecting on all the things we’ve accomplished over the past month. I
want to go more in detail about the door-to-door evangelism and the
success of our Bible fundraiser, but I haven’t found the time to write
that long of a blog. So you get this one instead!
It’s remarkable how, halfway around the world, I still find so many
things that connect me to home.
As we drove up to the Bethel Training Center where we’ve been staying,
the first thing that I saw was a giant solar panel. The campus also
has a giant water tank, where their neighbors can come get filtered
water. A big part of Timothy Harvest Ministries’ outreach is providing
water filters to families and communities. All this sustainability
makes me think of my dad, who started building his own solar panels
and, if he can convince my mom, will live in a net zero house built
out of shipping containers.
On Saturday, we had what will probably be our last day of Children’s
Ministry. As always, we started our time with songs and a Bible story.
We’ve been meeting down by the lagoon on the campus because all the
children go for a swim after lunch. Then we make our way up to the
field where we play volleyball, catch, and otherwise hang out with the
kids.
But that day, our contact pulled a few extra things out of THM’s
treasure trove of equipment. I ended up throwing a Frisbee around with
several of the boys for at least an hour. Last summer, I began
associating Frisbees with my sister – she got our whole family
throwing one during our family vacation, and the two of us went to the
park in the sweltering August heat to play. Thanks to her, I’m a lot
better at aiming than I used to be, which really came in handy with a
couple of the kids who were just learning how to catch.
It makes my heart happy to have such reminders of home and family at a
time when I’ve barely been able to get enough connection to be able to
send them messages, much less hear their voices. I’m not one to be
homesick, but I do miss all the little joys of being near my family.
It is such a blessing to feel like they’re with me on this journey in
some small
way.
Love y’all!
