When we got to El Shaddai we had a meeting with the staff telling us all the ministry options we would have available this month. The first two options they mentioned was helping out in the baby house, which is pre-k and under, and helping teach preschool. My heart got so excited. That’s the age I love. But as more and more options became available, I started to wonder if I should do something different this month to challenge myself. I prayed about it and had conversations with my squadmates. I was leaning more towards doing something different when one of them said she going to something she was passionate about because we were going to have long days. Then I was torn and had no idea what I wanted to do, so when it came time to sign up for ministries, I put my name on seven different lists, and decided to let God take control and let Him tell whoever was making the schedule where to put me.

So it turned out my first day would be in preschool. And I absolutely loved it. After a not so great experience in the baby house on the second day I decided to go back to preschool, and that’s where I will be the rest of the month. Last Friday the normal preschool teachers had a meeting with the few girls that were helping there and said they wanted us to completely take over teaching for the rest of the time we are here, because once we leave it’ll be just them. They deserve a break so of course we agreed.

It took me a while to see it, but I am being challenged doing preschool. The older kids know English and understand what we are trying to teach them. However, the younger ones just blankly stare when you ask a question or try to discipline them, so we’ve had to figure out different ways to teach them and discipline so they understand. My Sunday afternoons now consist of planning for the week instead of napping or reading or playing games. But I am already seeing so much progress in them, and I am excited for what they will know in 2 weeks. And as I’ve reflected since I’ve been here, I am so grateful for the last year in Tuscaloosa when I got to intern with the preschool ministry. I’ve learned so much more than I realized there and I now feel confident in teaching the kids here in Swaziland. I love when God brings things full circle.
