There are a lot of hippie types in Palenque.  Hikers and homeless wanderers from all over the world.  I met a couple from California and Australia yesterday.  We met a couple from Austria last night and Brits are fairly common.  One stands out from the others.  He called himself Joe Peacemaker.  Maybe he´s at peace but I doubt it.  He must be near 50 and it seems like he´s been on the road . . . or on the street all of his life.  He said he was abandoned at the age of 4 and after a series of bad foster homes he ended up on the streets in his early teens.  He´s been all over.  He lived with Native Americans in the US.  He´s a genuine conspiracy nut.  I learned from him¨Stargate SG1¨ the sci-fi television show . . .well, that´s for real.  He feels called of God to demand that we shut down our Stargate and quit interfering in intergalactic matters.  I do agree with him that we have enough issues on our own planet that we shouldn´t be involved in such universal matters.  Then again, maybe I´m just a closet isolationist.

All kidding aside, I doubt you can see all of the world he´s seen and see it from such an up-close, earthy perspective and not have some genuinely wise insights.  But I fear that Joe is missing the freedom in Christ that God created him to enjoy.  He seems tormented with so many deceptions.  Spending time with him was a reminder that we rarely ever believe the outright lie.  The essence of deception is truth mixed with error.   Whisper a prayer for Joe when you think about it.
