It was a marvelous night for a moon dance…beneath the cover of October skies.
The sky was aglow – and a chill hung in the air amidst our laughter. What a night!

Wanting to experience a little Romanian culture – Aubrie, Shawndell, and I decided to see a show at the National Romanian Opera Sunday evening. We’d hoped for a ballet to be in town – but found no information to lead us where we desired to go. Boarding the maxi-taxi, we headed toward the metro -and a few stops later were in front of the opera house.

The show for the evening was “Seara Balanchine” or “Night Ballerina”.
“How cool is that?” we thought, “Why not see an OPERA with dancing in it?”

The first half of the show was interesting. Organ music buzzed throughout the auditorium as colorful dancers pranced to and fro on the stage. I couldn’t help but wonder “Why hasn’t anyone sang yet?” At this point, I still believed we’d gone to see an opera. Believe it or not, it was a ballet –  and I’d misunderstood my Romanian ticket (costing all of (10lei) or $3.50). I was mistaken, but very thankful – for as the curtains parted for the second portion of the show – a stream of beautiful elegant ballerinas – clad in pointe shoes and flowing tu-tus emerged. The best part of this whole event, was that the Lord knew the desire of all our hearts to see a ballet – and totally surprised us with one! I guess one could even venture to say…”Jesus took us to the ballet!”

I felt like a little girl in dance class – I sat amazed at their movements across the stage. Such precision, such discipline, such balance, grace, and technique. At one point of the show there were close to 30 dancers jumping, leaping, swirling across the treat. This was a delightful time indeed.  The most comical part of the show was surprisingly, not the men in tights, but rather, the curtain calls where people bowed 3, 4, or maybe even 5 times.

We left the show that evening prancing down the sidewalks of Bucharest to the metro stop – practicing our incredible, but secret ballerina skills. Personally, I feel as though one of the most valuable things in life is spending time with people – investing in their interests, and letting them be a part of yours. Life is full of surprises – full of opportunities and adventure – full of moments where you choose to create memories or not. Spontaneously heading into downtown Bucharest for a show on a Sunday evening, without prior planning, and no idea just what we’d see, reminded me of this. I love moving through and in life’s adventures with beautiful people beside me. It’s a treat!
