Jesus on Tap & the Love Trance

Relevance to culture is not an option. This has been core value of my spiritual community (Mosaic) back at home. I really see it coming to life at New Earth Tribe in Australia. Truth be told, I was in such culture shock at the gathering of hippie Christians simply because their cultural norms were so different from those back at home. Language is such an important part of relevant communication- the jargon here included “Love Trance”, “Jesus on Tap”, and “Being intoxicated with the Spirit of God”. I thought everyone was “high” for the first hour, but the only people that were confused were us World Racers. Behind this type of language was TRUTH from the Scriptures. For instance, Jesus on Tap was their phrase for how we can access him the same way alcohol would be accessed at a  bar and to be filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. “Do you want some Gentleness? Some goodness? Some kindness?” said the hippie preacher. Are you living in love and remaining in the love of Jesus – this was defined as the Love Trance. I am not speaking of compromising truth, just about speaking it in a way that those around you will understand.

 

This experience made me realize how important it is to be relevant to our culture in how we communicate. Sharing with someone about your life or relationship with God can’t be done in your language and your words if you are to be heard. New Earth Tribe was not trying to communicated to me so much as a the community at Byron. I was a visitor from another country who was a little freaked out at first to be honest, but I realized I needed to be there to see that we need to communicated in the language of those we seek to love.
