Living in California, the animal that’s everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE, is the pigeon. Cows and sheep however are the animals that are as plentiful as the pigeons in New Zealand. They are the dogs, cats, and goldfish of our every day American existence- serving as pets and the Kiwi’s best friend. Yes, I am sure they are named as well, but instead of Fluffy, Scruffy, and Muffy, it’s probably more like Moofasa, Baaaambi, and maybe Bertha. Anyways, here are some other differences between New Zealand and California.

Ca: Toll across the bay bridge is $4  NZ: Toll is $1

Ca: Used napkins NZ: Burnables (is their word for used paper)

Ca: Peanut butter spread NZ: Marmite spread (I like peanut butter better)

Ca: When restrooms are occupied, it says “Occupied” NZ: When toilets are used, it says “Ngaged”

Ca: 15% tip NZ: N/A unless you are feeling really generous. It isn’t customary to tip here.

Ca: “Cool” NZ: “Choice” (duh, their word for “cool”)

Ca: 25mph sign NZ: “Lifesavers don’t always race to the top instead of slow down.” sign

Ca: Weather- the usual mid 60 degrees, sunny and occasionally cloudy NZ: Weather- YOU BETTER WEAR SUNSCREEN HERE. It’s their staple lotion. Ozone layer is very thin, I was sunburned here the first day even with 60-70 degree weather.

Last but not least,

Ca: The usual English NZ: HOT Kiwi accent (trust me, it’s quite choice)

Please let Scruffy, Fluffy, and Muffy know that Bertha, Moofasa, Baaaambi, and I are saying “Hi”.
