The date was Monday, October 22nd. I had just finished English Club with the kids and I immediately headed straight up the stairs to go to the bedroom. I walked up the flight of stairs slowly, and with precision, lifting each leg as if it weighed as much as a ton of bricks. Careful not to miss a single step, I successfully navigated the staircase. As I turned the corner, I was caught off-guard by the hundreds upon thousands of bugs that were swarming in the hallway. Bugs of every different kind; they mocked me as I gazed at the door that stood on the opposite side of them, challenging me to try and pass. It was completely dark outside, except for the lone light that shone bright in the hallway, just above the horde of insects.
For what felt like minutes, but was actually mere seconds, I stood in the pitch black of the hallway, trying to devise an elaborate plan. If I ducked my head low enough, would I avoid the swarm? If I cover my hair with one hand, and my mouth with the other, how will I open the door? I looked carefully at the floor and realized that it had disappeared underneath the black hole of bugs. My second dilemma… my shoes are inside the bedroom. Is it worth getting bug guts all over my feet, or should I wait for one of my teammates to make the long and perilous journey themselves and send my shoes when they successfully reach the bedroom?
I quickly recognized my need for a verdict, as the bugs suddenly began to fly at me in full force, smacking me in the face and threatening my life. As I was about to make a mad dash for the door, an angel from God appeared to me. She had a broom in her hand and curiously enough looked a lot like one of the children from the orphanage. She began to briskly clear the path, one deliberate brush after the other.
In five brief seconds, the disastrous path was cleared and ready for me to pass. At the last second I decided to lift the neck of my shirt just high enough to cover my nose and mouth, freeing one hand to shield my hair from the flock of insects, and as an added bonus, allowing a free hand for opening the door.
to be continued…
