I’ve been to 18 countries in the last 3 years. I spent my 24th birthday in Cambodia, my 25th in Spain and I’ll be spending my 27th in Romania. I’ve gone whitewater rafting on the Nile, been on safari in the Serengeti and dipped my toes in the Bay of Bengal. I have stories on stories of places I’ve gone, things I’ve seen and people I’ve met.
When I signed on to squad lead in July I knew I’d be in store for more passport stamps, outdoor adventures and “pinch me, I must be dreaming” moments. And I was right, but in between those moments there has also been a lot of reality. Harsh reality. The kind that reveals your weaknesses, smacks you in the face and leaves you feeling utterly exposed.
Throughout these last five months there have been times where I’ve failed, times where I’ve had to apologize, times where I have questioned my leadership abilities and times where I’ve felt completely in over my head.
It’s been hard. It’s been stretching. It’s been exactly what I’ve needed.
The timeline was for 5 months. I’ve paid my dues, dropped some wisdom and raised up some new leaders to take the reigns. I should’ve hopped on a plane back to South Carolina 5 days ago, but I didn’t. I couldn’t. I chose to stay.
I am choosing to walk it out for another 3 months with this group of people who have brought me through a rollercoaster of emotions and continue to draw me closer to Christ on a daily basis.
I don’t imagine it will get any easier. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that the biggest challenges still lie ahead. That’s what it’s all about though, right? Holding firm to what you know while pushing forward into the unknown.
Here’s to embracing the mystery, being exposed and saying “yes and amen” to everything He has set before me.
