When you think of Africa, what image comes to your head? A rural, poverty stricken place with children running up to you shouting “Mazungu! How about city streets filled during the day with busy shoppers and at night with young adults hitting the bar scene, or local club?

This month those two worlds collide as we work alongside Deliverance Church Lang’ata. We are staying in an estate near the church. As we walk out of out estate building we overlook Kibera slums. One of the biggest slums in the world. There is an estimated over 1 million people living there. There are eight of us living in a small apartment, with enough rationed water for the single male who lived here before. Our meals are made by a woman from the church, who walks about an hour each way from her house to ours.

Our work this month entails door to door evangelism in the community, teaching Bible lessons at public schools, and a high school counseling program known as Weekend Challenge. We we also be visiting a church in Kibera in a week and a half to share with them, our story and encourage them.

Our first day of ministry was a hike up the Ngong Hills. Now these are not the ordinary hills you would think of. These hills take you eye level with the clouds. A breathtaking view, and exhausting journey. We went with the youth of the church and enjoyed games and fellowship on hill 6 of 7. The above picture gives taste to how we felt.

This month is proving to not fall into expectations, but instead surpass any expectations that I had before.
