What’s and Unsung Hero?

This is my second UH month. UH stand for Unsung Hero. It means that my team, instead of spending this month with a single ministry the entire time; travels wherever God leads us, seeking out new ministries to partner with AIM so that World Race teams can work with and stay with them in the future.

This month: Namibia.

I had never even heard of Namibia. Most of our team spent a couple weeks remembering how to even pronounce it. Na-maybe-ah anyone?

Sometimes it’s real easy to be skeptical of an entire month with NO plan. Especially when you arrive (did I mention NO plan?) and find that the team budget (I’m team treasurer) doesn’t even come close to the actual cost of living in this particular country.

So there we were: Seven people, 14 backpacks; standing outside a bus station in scalding hot sun. New country, new continent. No idea how or where to get breakfast, wifi, and supplies.

Once we found wifi, (a rather difficult, HOT little journey) we very quickly discovered that the cheapest place to sleep that night would be over double our budget; and that was for camping.

That’s how we started out. We ENDED day 1 with meeting a pastor who gave us a tour of his mega church, explained multiple ministry opportunities for future teams, arranged for a place for us to stay for FREE, arranged for us to spend that weekend camping at a beach and helping out at a youth camp, and more.

That was day 1 folks. It’s just been grand from there on in.

We’ve found several EXCELLENT and exciting ministry opportunities to partner with.

This country is so open to World Race teams. I’ve had more than one person look me in the eyes and ask me to help his/her country. I’ve been to orphanages, a dump, the youth camp, churches, a nursing home, markets, (GREAT place to get a feel for a country) and more. Namibia has stolen my heart and will undoubtedly keep a piece of it forever.

But best of all, I’ve been given a glimpse into something so much bigger than me. I have personally gotten to be a part of the groundwork for future missions in this country. I haven’t spent the month working with orphans or visiting slums. I’ve helped arrange for hundreds of future Racers who will follow after my team and I, to work with these ministries in the years to come.

Wow! What an honor.

I pray that my time here will be fruitful. I pray that future teams will love this place as much, and much more than I do.

Today is my last day here. I leave tonight for South Africa; leaving this precious country in the hands of God and future Racers, trusting that the Holy Spirit will continue to work in the hearts of Namibia.

I will miss you, sweet country.

As for fundraising: By the brilliant grace of God, I’m SO very close to reaching my Jan 1 deadline. I need to be fully funded by then and I’m so close. Can you help me reach the deadline? Thank you!
