There are ants in my clothes, my food, burrowing into my
bed, crawling all over my body, and on my toilet seat. You learn to just suck it up and eat them
(extra protein right?). And you know
when you’re at home and you feel like something crawling on you and there
really isn’t? Well here, just trust that
something is definitely crawling on you, and it has brought friends with
it. My favorite perfume has become bug
spray. The good thing about it is it
covers the smell when you can’t bathe because the water gets shut off for who
knows how long.
My team this month is ministering in a village about 15
minutes outside of the city of Siem Reap.
The village is called Pouk. No
worries, we have it good in the village.
We have electricity and running water (sometimes). When we don’t have running water we have a
water pump so we always have some sort of water. We have our own cute little room and our own
bathroom. We are staying and working
with University of Nations. We have 3
wonderful female contacts that are the permanent teachers at University of
Nations. They are beautiful, hard
working women that love the Lord and love this ministry. It’s such an honor to get to work with these
women.
Our schedule isn’t exactly finalized yet, but we will be
helping teach English, do some hygiene with the kids in the village, and
teaching some devotions. Every day there
is one English class in the morning from 11-12 with more younger kids. Then from 5-6 there are 3 English classes of
all different levels and from 6-7 there are 2 classes-one is a conversation
class and the other is an advanced class with mostly high school/college aged
students. On Wednesdays instead of
English classes we teach Christian values which is basically just doing devotions
with the students. On Tuesday and
Thursday mornings we go to surrounding villages and play with the kids, teach
them some English, and do devotions.
Some days before the evening classes the kids will come and we wash
their hair for them.
Our team will be starting a Pronunciation class for the
month we are here. I’m really excited
to start this new class. Hopefully we
can get it started and when other volunteers come that are native English
speakers they can just pick the class right back up. Next week we should be able to really start
diving into ministry and start teaching.
I love love love love love this ministry. I love love love love Cambodia. Even despite the ants in my underpants, I
absolutely love everything about being here.
My heart has already been stolen.
