WE’RE TRAVEL DAY PROS….
I have yet to write a blog about travel days. Obviously, we travel at the end of each month to get to the next country…whether that looks like planes, trains, automobiles, or a few of the above back to back. Some of my most memorable moments happened on these days. Most of the time K Squad travels together, which means we find a destination to all meet up then head out for the next country. Logistics, squad leaders, and TLs from the squad really step up to be sure we get where we need to be and all as one big happy family. This is a time for our squad to catch up with people either from previous teams or anyone else on the squad. Normally we’re pretty exhausted halfway through travel day, using each other to lean on or just lay on!
Travel day food consists of the free meals given on planes and buses, stocking up on snacks that are well over priced, or munching on whatever we may have gotten prior to taking off! We love the blankets and pillows we get to crash with and the movies (sometimes in English) that are played. Or better yet, the choices of movies we get for ourselves on the planes.
Jetlag is legit, many of us already know that. Going from the states to West Africa, that’s an all new meaning to adjusting to a different time zone. We hit that lag again somewhat when we headed to Asia, but it was hardcore when we finally landed in Central America. I’m sure I can speak for the squad when I say, we’re relieved to only be an hour or two behind for the last few months of the race. We’re heading back to the states with no worries of lagging whatsoever!
The bathrooms. Yup, I went there. Using the potty on the planes, such a decent experience. This goes for the train we had to take, not too shabby. Using the potty on a bus, let’s just say it helps to have some quick reflexes and fairly decent strong thighs.
Traveling throughout the ministry has been different each month too. This just all depends on the ministry host and whether they can or can’t provide transportation for us. We have taken rickshaws, tuk tuks, songthaews (pronounced: song tail), auto, motos, taxi, chicken bus, and I’m sure there are more but this is about all I could come up with. Oh, and then there’s….our own legs and feet. This month especially has consisted of walking everywhere in the mountains and we love it, it’s just really exhausting! We literally hike from our ministry home to the schools we are teaching at, down here there and legit uphill back. We find ourselves singing the Rocky song for inspiration and strength to make it up that hill AND we root for each other as we finally make it to the top! I love my team, it’s the little things!!
Anyway, this is such a spontaneous and random blog but I wanted to have some fun with it. I hope it gives you a glimpse of how we get around and get to experience all the things around the world..things so different from the states.
