I really love this place!! We are living with Pastor Barasa
and his amazing family in Kiminini, Kenya this month. Pastor and his beautiful
wife, Anne, have 6 children of their own ranging in age from 13-24 years old
and they have also taken in 4 orphans, as well as many other children and young adults in the
community who need the love of a family or a meal to eat. This family truly lives out the Gospel in their
everyday lives. They provide a home for the homeless and a father to the
fatherless.

The community is very hospitable and people frequently invite
us into their homes for tea. Every time we walk outside, we hear children
yelling “Mzungu, how are you?â€ The people here are so friendly and loving–they
always want to make you feel welcomed. Most people know English fairly well, since
it is one of the national languages along with Swahili. I have been attempting
to learn as much Swahili as possible while we’re here, which has been quite a fun learning experience. My favorite word is piki-piki, which means motorcycle 🙂

I have absolutely loved becoming a part of the family, as
they welcomed us in from the very first day we arrived. I have experienced many
things and learned how to do much of the everyday work they do here in Kenya. A
typical day includes: washing dishes, hand washing clothes, seeing sheep give
birth, using the restroom in a hole in the ground, cooking Kenyan foods like chapatti and rice,
getting my hair braided, learning how to dance, singing Swahili songs, playing
volleyball, slaughtering animals, etc. It’s a lot of work and I don’t have much
free time, but I really enjoy the conversations I have and memories I make
every day!
