After having more than
fifty children yesterday, I came with a plan. Divide them into groups. There
were far too many and it was horribly difficult to try and keep control of the
group with them all together.

Today I
met the Sunday School girls just after 2pm. We discussed our desire for getting to know each girl. As the girls were released from their classes
to come, we divided them into groups no larger than twelve.
Each of my Sunday School girls took a group.

 Every girl gave the
following information:

1.       Name

2.       Date of Birth

3.       Favorite Color, Food, Scripture/Bible Character

4.       Family Status/ Are parents living?

5.       Relationship with God

6.       Home Church if any

7.       Future Plans

8.       Location of Home

I watched as my older
girls became confident amongst the younger ones. The felt needed. The felt like a mentor. They opened up with them, sharing their own
stories.
 They even began leading bible
studies beyond what I had planned. They were
asked to facilitate a discussion on Ruth, the moabite woman choosing Naomi’s
God. I was amazed by their teaching
capabilities. The younger girls were
intrigued by them. The younger ones
asked insightful questions, leading to discussions on other stories in the
Bible.
 Girls felt comfortable speaking
in their mother tongue (Dhulo) as well as KiSwahili and English. I didn’t mind what language they spoke for I
just wanted them to talk.

Towards the end, a few of
the groups decided to act out a portion of Ruth’s story. Their creativity is beyond description. To see these girls laugh and become playful
with one another brought joy to my heart.
See, last week, I was the teacher. I taught the Sunday School girls.
I taught them confidence through the arts so that they can be empowered
to teach others.

Our school girls finished
their time with dancing and worship songs. And as always, before leaving, we said The Lord’s Prayer and The Grace.

It was important for me to
have feedback with my Sunday School girls. I wanted to know how they felt about today’s time with the school
girls. Each girl wore smiles. While yesterday seemed to carry negative
comments, today was nothing but positive. They had so much fun leading the groups and said they would love to do
it again and again.
 I encouraged each of
them, praising them for a job well done – pointing out great actions I saw in
each girl. Nancy offered to pray and boy
was it so very powerful.

Seeing these girls come
alive is knocking me out of my boots.
