Nearly eight years ago I hesitantly walked in a prison with
my family to see my uncle.
He was sentenced to more than one hundred years for murder. He being imprisoned was one of the
toughest times for my family. It
led me to somewhat of a depression in High School. Walking into the prison was scary. Fear controlled my mind until I got to see my uncle. I embraced him and knew everything would
be okay. As I sat that day with my
uncle he told great stories and helped our spirits stay high. I was proud to hear that he started a
gospel quartet in the prison. God used that prison for my uncle to
turn his life around and have a great relationship with Jesus Christ. My uncle has preached to many in the
prison cell.
Last Saturday God gave my
teammates and I the opportunity to preach in the prison. More than four hundred men sat,
squatted and stood in a semi-circle facing us on our benches. We went along with a youth group from
our sister church in Nairobi, Kenya.
They performed skits, led an awesome praise and worship and gave
testimonies.
God spoke through the Word and testimonies of my teammates Keturah
and Kristen, to convict the hearts of those prisoners. They told them that there is much
freedom in Christ. When we are
living in sin, we are in bondage.
Walking in the Spirit is free.
We can seek Him daily and trust His leadership. We don’t have to be bound to our past
addictions but walk freely in the love of Jesus Christ, living for Him and
allowing Him to live through us.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as nearly eleven prisoners gave
their hearts to Jesus Christ. Kristen and Keturah prayed over them and encouraged their
walk in the Lord. An invitation
was also given for those who are seeking to be healed. More than twenty men walked up to be
prayed over. We truly believe
whatever the situations in their life, they were healed and freed from them
that day.
Like the change I saw in my uncle, I trust and believe that God will
bring about great change in the men at that prison.
