One morning as we were making preparations to leave for our prayer walk, it seemed like one thing after another was holding us back. By the time Jeanne and I got out the door, the other girls were plum down another street. We couldn’t seem to catch up with them. We were nearing the third coldasac and Kerry was coming out declaring she’d been bit by a dog.  We came home after only fifteen minute of prayer, very concerned for Kerry. We prayed over her and against any disease the dog might carry. After a doctor’s visit, Kerry was just fine.

She and I spent the day together after my scheduled tutee didn’t show. Kerry let me do two-strand twist to the front and back of her hair. It was so rewarding seeing how much joy it brought her.

That afternoon for children from the community stopped by admiring Kerry’s hair. She sent them to me and they made appointments to have their hair done afterschool the next day.

In the past week nearly 15 children in this community have had their hair braided. They keep going back and telling others. We have had such a difficult time building relationships with the adults in this community but God has blessed us to do so with the children. The whole community seems to show up during hair braiding times. Nearly 20 children were outdoors one day watching me braid hair. Some braiding sessions have led to brief conversations about God’s goodness, other conversations about home life. Nevertheless they are conversations and God is answering our prayer. The mother’s of the children have now asked to get their hair braided.

While I am sad for Kerry’s dog bite, I know it was all in God’s plan. He needed her to stay at home that day to get her hair braided so she could tell others. God is literally bringing the next generation to us.
