Rwanda: “The Land of A Thousand Hills”
Official Name: The Republic of Rwanda
Capital: Kigali (The Largest City)

- Located in the Great Lakes region of east-central Africa just south of the equator
- Rwanda is bordered on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the north by Uganda, on the east by Tanzania, and on the south by Burundi
- Similar in size to the state of Maryland (Slightly Smaller)
- 23,668 square kilometers (10,169 square miles)
- Landlocked
- Rwanda has 5 volcanoes, 23 lakes, and numerous rivers, some forming the source of the White Nile River
- Consists of savannah grasslands, grassy uplands and hills, and mountains with altitude declining from west to east
- Home to the volcanic Virunga Mountains in the northwest part of the country (Visoke [Elevation 3,711 m] the country’s only historically active volcano)
- Highest Point: Volcan Karisimbi (4,519 m)
- The climate is temperate

- Gained independence from Belgium in 1962
- Civil wars between ethnic Hutus and Tutsis have marked the country’s history
- In 1994, the genocide of some 800,000 Tutsis by Hutus occurred before Tutsi forces could gain control of Rwanda. Hutu militias fled Rwanda and continued to attack Tutsis from Zaire until Rwandan forces invaded Zaire in 1997—where they remained until 2002, when the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) agreed to help disarm Hutu gunmen.
- In 2003, Rwanda’s first election in a decade installed Paul Kagame as president.
- Later that year, multiparty parliamentary elections consolidated Kagame’s power, but observers declared voting was marred by irregularities and fraud.
- In November 2007, Rwanda signed a peace deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo in which the DRC agreed to hand over refugees suspected of involvement in the 1994 genocide.
