‘The Breaking Point’ is my favorite episode of the HBO series Band of Brothers, which is based on true stories from World War 2. It’s an annual tradition for me during this time of year to watch the series as I go through the transition that summer inevitably brings me. I move every year during the summer. My room is usually a mess. Sometimes I have to repaint the walls. There is always last minute cleaning and details to take care of. Usually this transition has just meant moving down the street, or perhaps getting one more or less roommate. This year the transition changes… everything.
This year’s transition, and the next 5 days, includes buying a few last minute items, calling insurance agents and pharmacists, going to last minute appointments, and the best/worst part… saying goodbyes. I always unravel a little emotionally during this time of year. This is the home stretch, the breaking point.
The hardest part so far has been saying goodbye to work and the coworkers. There are probably many reasons for this, not the least being that they are the ones I see the most (on a regular, day-to-day basis). That and, as Mr. Exley has always told me, because our most meaningful relationships are built while serving beside one another. I am very sad to leave this group whom I have served with; however, this next journey starts soon, and I believe God has once again set me up with cool people to enjoy along the way.
I hope to tell you more about my teammates and a few more specifics about the trip tomorrow.
P.S. One last thing, completely unrelated to anything… but today I played my last stateside ultimate frisbee game… in a skirt.
