We’re in Africa!

Over and over on this World Race I have heard how amazing Africa is and how much I will love it. When I asked what is so wonderful about Africa, the response given was “they get it” – meaning Africans have a deep sense of the spiritual world, so not only are they open and real about God, but spiritual battles and miracles of God are abundant.

We flew into Johannesburg after dark on Thursday, then drove to Pretoria to stay the night at Alabanza (a missionary retreat center). Early the following morning, we piled uncomfortably into a van/bus and drove six hours to Manzini, Swaziland. We drove through African countryside, which strangely resembles the rolling farmlands and piedmont hills of North Carolina and Tennessee. Even upon arriving in Manzini, I struggled to believe that “this is Africa” (though the largest city in Swazi, the city reminds me of a small southern town).

Our host, Gary Black, met us at the clinic building where we are currently residing, and filled us in on life and ministry here, and even showed us the gym a few blocks away (seriously? I get to work out for a week in Africa for only $3.50!).

This is not the Africa I envisioned.

However, things are soon to change. This week is being spent doing spiritual training and briefing on what our time in Africa will look like. We will spend the following three months in various parts of southern Africa, moving to a new ministry every three to four weeks. Our possible ministries include working with Gary Black and the G-42 movement to build a children’s home and other projects in Nsoko, Swaziland; helping Tom Davis and Heidi Baker in Mozambique with orphan relief and flood clean-up; working in shantytowns in Capetown, South Africa with Tom Sipling.

Please be in prayer for us as we seek the Lord and how He wants to move in Africa. Pray for our health and saftey in this new territory, and pray that we will not move except where and when He tells us to move.
