So my friend is living in Switzerland right now and she went through her first 4th of July off of American soil as I also did this month. (see next blog)

Celebrating the 4th this year was really hard.  The fourth is a time of family, a time of FOOD (dear Lord I miss food), a time of being thankful for freedom.
Traditionally, those things are celebrated via bbq’s, fireworks and games. And yet this year I had non of those things to entertain me, and it forced some much needed reflection. That day was when I  started to think about the deeper things I’m thankful for.

I am thankful that

  • I am from a country always has internet (except for sometimes in Vermont),

  • that you can drive through the side of a building and have food ready for you,

  • that you can VOTE FREELY

  • you rarely are ever in need of water

and even more seldomly do you question whether you will get sick from the water.

    • You can drive your own car

    • You can check Google for a quick search when you need directions

  • You can use a phone and know it will work

    • You turn on the light switch and expect there to be light.

  • ( I am having a rough time with the editing on this computer, so sorry about the random bullet points)

A country that
does not look aside during sex trafficking

will not let corrupted individuals buy their way out of justice

You do not have to travel 14 hours to get to a hospital if you need to have legit surgery

You can Pray freely
Speak BOLDLY
Eat RIDICULOUSLY  (notice a theme?)   =)

but here is the point.

Sometimes it takes getting away from your home to realize just how much you have.

Man I miss America, but not in a homesick way,
in a “I’m so proud to be an American!”

And so one week after the 4th, we got together and had a camp fire.

It was small.
It had no food.
But man did we have fun.
We made burning stick sparklers.

We laughed and joked as free people.

We told stories of traditions and thoughts of home.

But my favorite moment of them all was when we all said the pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem.  It was just a good time to be proud of my nation, even though we were so far apart.

So i know that the 4th is over, but please do not let your thankfulness be.

Do not slip into a lifestyle of contentment. a lifestyle that forgets all the blessings we have or all the priveldges that 80% of the rest of the world will never have like safe water, protection from the flue or Reese’s cups at any moment of the day  =)

So God bless America
God bless you all

And have a great day in the Lord.

My next blog is from my friend who puts to words things that I cannot.
