It’s easy to plant a church and tell people about Jesus in places that are safe and comfortable, but what about a place that is rejected by most people in your country?
Los Guido isn’t the number one choice from your travel agent when visiting Costa Rica. In fact, most locals won’t ever visit because of its stereotype. Dirty, poor, and scary… a slum. When we asked our ministry host Mark why his wife and him have spent the past 14 years in this slum, his answer was simple. “God told us to go to the place no one would dare go, Los Guido”.
I have officially made it through a week in Costa Rica. Our team is serving along side a ministry called the Christian Light Foundation. This ministry is very important to Los Guido because it opens its doors and feeds children a warm meal once a day. Many of these kids wouldn’t have that if it weren’t for this ministry. Monday-Friday our team of 6 women teach English in the local school and have been loving every second of it. The special part about teaching English in this local school is that many of our students go to the feeding center for lunch! It is such a blessing developing a relationship with these children and sharing Jesus with them! On Saturday’s, the feeding center not only provides a meal for the kids, but lots of fun! Last Saturday we played on the slip n slide with the kids, jumped rope, and blew bubbles! And on Sunday, at 3pm we have church! Our team sleeps inside the feeding center so we are constantly in the middle of community. We have set up our tents inside the center to give us our own “personal space”.
Some other fun facts for you! We have officially learned the bus system here in Los Guido. We take a 35 minute bus ride if we want to use wifi or get groceries. I am currently in McDonalds writing this blog because it is the closest place to get wifi! This weekend we are planning on going to the beach which is a National Park here. I might serve with the worship team this week so pray my Spanish improves in the next 3 days! Other than that, life is quickly moving along. It is crazy that we only have a few more weeks here and then are off to the next country.
Prayer request:
The youth group is having an outreach on October 22nd. It is Fear Factor themed and we are helping as judges. Pray that the youth can invite friends and that the event goes well! Continue to pray for our team and squad, that the other ministries in Costa Rica are bringing others close to Jesus! And please keep my family and friends back home in your prayers. I miss them greatly and homesickness has already begun. Thank you so much for the prayers and support!
