I’m not a big breakfast eater but I do enjoy rising early on occasion just to talk with my God. This morning I woke up at camp and sat myself down in the dining hall ’cause I was eager to talk with Him. It started out as some selfish venting and anger built up from the day before. “Good morning, God, let’s talk about me…”

Fortunately, God had different plans.
I turned to 1-3 John and was skimming through the truth and passion that was written on the pages. It was an inspiring example for a blogger. My heart stopped at 1 John 2:6:

But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

Pardon me, I don’t think I’m wrong about this, but that is not a casual verse. We must walk as Jesus did…and He was pretty A-mazing. I kept reading that verse over and over. Anytime I read aloud I add emphasis and passion – when did it become required to read God’s Word in monotone? God’s not monotone. There’s power in those words. We should claim it – no less, no complaining, no self-righteousness, no boasting, no judging – you. Don’t look to anyone else for a standard, you live like Christ. What’s His example?

When a friend joined me at the breakfast table I asked what his favorite verse was – maybe some inspiration from a brother believer could help me tune into what the Lord wanted to say this morning. He answered with:

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! (Phil. 2:5-8)

He added that this is what our faith it based from. And Christ’s example of love has set us apart from all other religions. Once I was told that a literal translation of verse 6 says ”
Because He was God…” He is God, He is love. Like Jesus we should have a servant’s attitude and humble ourselves (Yes, humble ourselves, don’t be a dork and stubbornly wait to be broken. God gave us a spirit of self-discipline for a reason) to serve others in love.

What a beautiful truth to change my attitude this morning. Thanks for breakfast, Jesus!
