I’ve just started Month 10 on The World Race and decided to update the list of things I packed in Month 1.
Things have changed a bit. Some things are more important and others not so much anymore. Hope this helps all of you future racers as you try to figure out how to pack your life for 11 months.
Let me know if you have any questions and I’d be happy to share my advice or wisdom from my squad mates. Everyone has different needs and comforts and ultimately you will figure out along the way what you need and don’t need. But, don’t stress too much and spend a ton of money and space on things you don’t need.
Gear
65 liter Kelty Backpack This has been a great backpack!
Kelty Daypack
Sleeping bag & liner Dropped the Sleeping bag, but was absolutely necessary for the colder months. I wished I would have brought a sea to summit liner. Mine was horrible and my teammates who had these loved them. They were great for when you didn’t want to use a sleeping bag, cold busses, and nasty hostel beds.
Thermarest Sleeping Pad Go for a thicker pad. It packs nice and small but not very comfortable.
Large Travel pillow Lost this in an airport in month 7, but I loved it!
Nalgene Water bottle & splash guard Lost the splash guard month 1, but the Nalgene was a must have!
2 Medium space saver Ziplock bags Horrible idea, they stopped sealing month 2.
2 Compression sacks (medium & large) These are great for my tent, but for clothes I haven’t liked them. They are too bulky in my bag. I would have gone with the packing cubes, my teammates love them. Eventually, I just started using grocery bags and stuffing it in my bag.
Kelty 2 person tent Loved this tent. I haven’t used it very much so the lighter it is the better so you don’t feel bad about carrying it around.
Footprint Get one that fits your tent. Those who didn’t have one woke up to puddles a lot. They are a necessity!
Travel Quick dry towel I didn’t like mine. I never felt dry. I used a sarong.
Colapsable bowl/plate I had a plate that could also be a bowl. I got the larger one and was happy with it. Those who had smaller bowls were up-happy because it’s not as versatile. Tupperware is also good to have if you want to save some money…it just takes up more space.
Coleman multi utensil (spoon, fork, knife) A camping fork/spoon would have been better.
6 Carabineers These have come in handy.
XL Osprey airporter Its horrible! If you can get one that allows you to carry your backpack on our bag, that is best. If not get a duffle. The osprey has too thin of a strap and its awkward to carry. No one likes them!
Kelty rain cover for backpack Never use it.
2 Headlamps One was fine…but I was able to share.
2 Travel locks Great for my bag and also you will want one to lock your stuff at hostels.
ENO hammock & Slap Straps I’m glad I brought this.
Laundry bag Ripped a hole in mine but it was good while it lasted.
Sleeping Pad Repair kit Haven’t used it but if I needed it, but many have popped their pads.
Clothes
2 long skirts One has been enough, but I didn’t need it a lot in my ministries
1 knee length skirt Nice for hot months
1 capris
1 shorts
1 jeans
1 yoga pants
2 gym shorts I picked up an extra pair month 1
2 t-shirts picked up a couple from the free pile and various countries
6 shirts (target V-necks) wore these all the time but didn’t need so many
1 cardigan great for colder months and dressing things up
1 sweater
1 rain jacket
12 underwear I haven’t regretted having a lot…if I had the room I would have brought more
1 swimsuit
2 sports bra Picked up 2 more
2 regular bras
4 socks
1 pair of sneakers
1 pair of crocs closed toes Never wore.
1 pair crocs sandals Great Shoes…i wore the Sexi model and loved them!
1 pair of toms
1 hat
1 headband
2 glasses I brought an old pair and was glad when mine were washed away by a wave in Nicaragua
contacts
1 sarong Best idea!
2 leggings So nice for turning shorts into ministry appropriate attire and for cold months.
4 undershirts
1 nice shirt picked up more along the way
1 tank top picked up 2 more
You really do wear a lot of the same things over and over. Only a few essentials for each kind of ministry is important. Some months all you wear is workout clothes and others you are in church every night. You can pick up a lot of things in country and from the free pile. Pack way less than you think and you’ll be fine.
Also, I picked up 2 dry fit shirts and loved them during months where laundry was hard to dy.
I got a pair of flowy pants from Peru and a pair of llama pants from Bolivia. Both were used a lot but sent home.
Bring stuff that you would wear at home. Don’t get a bunch of camping stuff if that’s not normally your style.
Toiletries
2 deodorants
2 toothbrushes
2 toothpastes
1 travel size shampoo
1 travel size conditioner
2 Face wash bars I like a specific brand and I’m glad I had an extra
1 floss
1 bug repellent You can buy this with team money so don’t stock up
4 chap stick
make-up
feminine products
1 lotion
2 baby wipes
4 hand sanitizers
hair ties
bobby pins
1 hanging toiletry bag Its was nice while it lasted but it broke month 5 and I haven’t missed it. Groceries bags work fine.
1 razor
soap bar a soap holder has been essential
baby powder
q-tips
tissues
Don’t bring a year’s worth unless you are super picky. You can find most products and brands in country.
Electronics
1 computer
IPod touch
IPhone
External hardrive great for collecting movies and music from squad mates
flash drive
Camera Never used because I used my iphone
Kindle you can get the Kindle app on your iphone….my kindle broke on travel day in month 4
4 headphones I’ve gone through a lot of these. But you can find them everywhere.
Chargers extras IPhone chords are great to have
Extras
Bible
journal
Pens and sharpies
Playing cards Teammates brought other games and have been happy with bringing those
ear plugs
eye mask loved this!
ziplock bags Used them for everything. Bought more along the way
clothes lines haven’t needed. Host’s usually have them
dryer sheets some people swear by them to keep their bag smelling good, I threw mine out month 2
tide to go dropped month 2
Febreeze used it a lot
Medicines can get anything for the most past at the pharmacies here
