Every point in the Christian walk God takes us to the desert. The desert is the part in our life that we don’t necessarily feel as though God cares or is even part of it. The desert can seem hopeless and dry and that there isn’t any point, but in reality, the desert is such a crucial part of our walks with Jesus. He brings us out in the desert not to abandon us but to bring more intimacy with Him. In those times it seems as though we are in a dry spell, rather it’s a time to press into Jesus and see the love He has for us and desires from us.
He takes us out to the desert to deprive the water of the very certain thing that is stopping us from gaining intimacy with Him. He brings us to this place for us to realize if He is worth it and can bring us out of the darkness we are stuck in. Satan cries in joy when he sees us suffering. Jesus cries in sadness when He sees us suffering, because He’s whispering to us, “Come to me. Let me love on you and show you that you’re worth, and I’ll take the suffering away.” The desert is the point in life where Jesus brings us to it to show us there is nothing that will ever take away that sadness, except for Him. He talks to us gently telling us He wants us to give Him our lives so he can make it sweet. It’s a time that He shows us that doing the right “Christiany” things doesn’t matter to him, but it’s where our hearts lie. He brings us to that starvation mode not to lecture us or to show us He’s disappointed in us, but instead He relays that He is desperately in love with us.
I get it, I know how that dry spell feels. I’ve been in that desert spot and it can honestly feel as though it’s a time that never ends. My desert was finding worth in alcohol and people. God took me to that spot to show me that I didn’t want to live my life off of that, but that I desired something more and something that would finally fulfill that emptiness. Even in my worst He showed me that He loved me.
