This month my team and I, along with one other team of 7 individuals, have the opportunity to work with an organization called CICRIN. We are living on the island of Ometepe, which is located on Lake Nicaragua and has a breathtaking landscape that includes 2 volcanoes! The ministry we are working with is a children’s center, similar to an orphanage, except that many of the children have parents alive and living nearby. Most of these parents couldn’t afford to keep their children, so they come here for help. The children live here and go to school at the schoolhouse on campus. Some parents come to visit, or sometimes we see them while out on walks or at church.
This place is like a breath of fresh air; the staff, the children, the landscape are beautiful. I love this place. Each day I help out at the school with anything from making murals, watching the pre-school/kindergarten class, reading with the 1st and 2nd graders, helping out individual students, whatever is needed. I love every minute of it. The people that work here make this place amazing as well; from the cooks in the kitchen, the construction/maintenance men, the teachers, and especially the ones we live and work with (Carla, Robert and Sam!!!). Each person radiates Christ and is such a joy to be around!
The kids that live here are such a joy as well! Most are around elementary school age, with a few middle and high school aged kids in the bunch. They are rambunctious and full of life and Jesus! The second day we were here we went to an evening church service and my heart melted seeing one of the kids down on his knees and face worshipping Jesus. Awesome. I may or may not see how many I can fit into my bag before leaving the island…if only! 🙂
