What is the World Race?
As I have been telling people that I’m going on the world race I’ve gotten a lot of confused questions. “Oh, so you’re going to be on that show that races around the world and you get clues and stuff right?” That’s the amazing race. “But it says race in the world race, so are you racing against other people?” Nope.
Here is the basic layout of the world race. 11 months 11 countries. There is a squad of about 60-80 young Christian missionaries that land in 1 of 11 countries at the same time. When you land in the country you will be serving in for the month you receive a ministry assignment. Your team, which consists of about 6 – 8 individuals, is assigned to work with a specific ministry for the month and leaves from the landing site to go to wherever that ministry is located. The assignments vary each month and sometimes even within the month to include staffing orphanages, teaching English, building houses, evangelism, working with sex trafficking victims, and so many more. Your team doesn’t know what ministry or kind of assignment you will be working with until you land in that country.
At the end of the month you move to the next country with your squad (give or take a few days). The trip consists of 11 months in 11 different countries, 1 month per country. My particular race includes these countries:
Honduras
Nicaragua
Costa Rica
Philippines
Thailand
Cambodia
India
Nepal
Kenya
Uganda
Rwanda
Everything that we need for the trip we carry in our backpack, including our tent and sleeping bag. In some countries we have housing with beds, etc. and in some countries we will be spending the month living out of our tents.
The idea is that there is a group of radical Christians who aren’t content to live ordinary lives, but instead want to be the hands and feet of Jesus around the world. Everything we do, we do with Christ as our center and as we serve other people, we share Jesus with them. Sometimes this means preaching the Word, sometimes it means just being an example of Christ by serving others as He would, no words needed.
Other racers reading this please feel free to add/edit this as I may have missed a few things. But, this is a basic version of what I am partnering with. I leave July 2013 and will return June 2014!!
