Airport thoughts
While I’m sitting here at the Johannesburg Airport waiting for the gate to open so that we can start preparing to fly to India for month 4, I can help but to reflect on the past 3 months that I’ve spent in Africa.
Out journey started out in South Africa where my team stayed in Port St Johns. A little town/village on the Eastern Cape. While there, my team stayed with Pastor Solomon, a true man of God who will literally give the shirt off his back or give up his meal to someone in need. We spent a weekend at a youth ‘winter survival camp’, held a talent show for the secondary school kids, met up with Transkei Life Project, and One Life ministrys. We went along with the Transkei kids to the boardwalk in Durban, and helped ‘decorate’ a garden with One Life at the Elokoweni primary school in Port Elisabeth. We met so many amazing people who are trying to change the ststud quo, and give these kids hope and a chance to be a normal kid.
Our next month was all squad month in Swaziland. We were on top of a mountain with a beautiful view. For the month, we would assist the ‘aunties’ at the El Shaddai Orpahanage. We all had jobs to do during the month that may have included: children’s ministry, road crew, pig pen cleanup, clinic, fence crew, and so on. We were each assigned a buddy. Our buddy was a child or teenager who we would be a big buddy to:). My little girls name was Nomphilo:)
Our next month brought us to Mozambique. My team, as well as another team, stayed in the city of Chimoio. We lived with a family of 3 1/2 (the wife was 9 months pregnant). They had a man who stayed there to help out with cleaning and running errands and psuch. His name was Jaquè. He helped us out so many times, especially when trying to start fires so that we could cook dinner. We would start, but as soon as he saw us, he would kindly take it over with a smile. Our ministry was with Life Church. They are a fairly new church plant. One week, we painted at an orphanage and played games with the kids. For a few days, our ministry was street evangelism, prayer walking, and inviting people to church. Through that, we met a lot of awesome people. We were able to pray for a almost deaf and mute man, and after we prayed, he had the biggest smile on his face and kept thanking us. Little encounters like that, give me more hope in this world.
As I sit here waiting to board my flight, I thank God for the past 3 months. I have learned and experienced so much. Thank you to all who have supported me so far on this journey. I am still in need of around $2,000 so that I may continue on the World Race. You can do that at brittanyjohnston.theworldrace.org. Thanks:)
