If you have ever had to give someone else a shower, you might realize that they may fuss when being given one. Especially if you work on the memory care unit at an assisted living like myself. And if you have ever worked on a memory care unit, u may know that sometimes, they fight. Especially if they don’t want a shower. Well, it happened yet again today. I had to help another aide give this sweet little elderly lady a shower. Problem was, she hates showers. Therefore, she was a tad fighsty. She was cussing and spitting, and scratching and trying to spit at us. We calmly continued her shower.
I have worked at an assisted living facility for a little over two years. Over that period, I have been: bit, kicked, cussed out, punched, slapped, spit on, scratched, you name it… It can be pretty hard, physically and emotionally. Back to the story…
We finished the shower and proceeded to dry her off and get her dressed and back into her wheel chair. When we were blowdrying her hair, she was cussin and telling us to stop. We calmly explained that we needed tomdry her hair so that she didn’t catch a cold. Afterwards, she was back to her cute sweet self. But during, she was a tad fighsty. She looked at another girl who was nearby and also called her a fool along with a few other choice words. The aide looked at her and replied that she didn’t do anything. The resident then looked at her and said ‘exactly! You didn’t do anything to stop it!’. That really got me thinking…
It similar to slavery, abortions, and everything else that we know is going on around us that we know is wrong. We may say it’s wrong, and post a few tweets or posts on facebook, but unless we Do Something about it, we are just as guilty. So next time u see something wrong, be a voice to the voiceless and Do Something. 🙂
