This is our last weekend in Guatemala and my team decided we wanted to spend some time together. I had heard that there was zip lining only about 20 mins away and it only costs Q15 (which is $2). I got all the info and off we went!
We got on the bus and took a short ride through the Guatemalan countryside and before we knew it, we were at the end of the road. We got off the bus and saw 3 different path ways. We picked the one that we thought was most legit, then started walking. We walked around for awhile and didn’t see anyone. After a little bit, a kid walks up to us and asks for money. We knew there as a small charge to get into the park but this did not seem legit.
We went ahead and gave the kid the money and explained to him that we wanted to go zip lining. He said yes and told us it would take about 10 mins to set up. Now let me remind you that this is supposed to be a national park, but in reality, it was someone’s back yard. We hiked around a bit, saw a beautiful waterfall, and enjoyed being together as a team.
We did have an 8 year old tour guide named Eric that showed us around. Since we don’t know much Spanish, it was mostly him walking around while we followed and he pointed at things for us to look at. We finished out the tour and made it up to the beginning of the zip line. 10 year old Daniel was there with harnesses and asked for the first volunteer. We all looked at each other and luckily Ben jumped up to go first. He leapt off the platform and rode the line. The line went over a waterfall and was absolutely gorgeous.
We all took a turn going down the zip line and we had a ton of fun. We trusted our lives with 2 little boys who were elementary age but we all survived. I am so blessed and happy to have teammates who will laugh with me when things are weird and sketchy but will also take risks in the name of fun. Team relentless hope is unstoppable… Someone should let the people of Nicaragua know before we get there on Friday!!!
