For the month of September my team was in Tegucigalpa, Honduras working with Iglesia Misionera de Cristo. I loved Honduras so much– the people, the beauty and the incredible ministry opportunities that I encountered during my time there. Here are a few tidbits and highlights from the month!
Month: 9
Location: Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Host: Moises Chino Murillo
Living sitch: living in tents in a 2 story building that is generally used for church meetings and is also the main location for the church’s community feeding center program
Ministry: Cooking for a feeding center, painting, home visits with the elderly in the church, attending and speaking at small group bible studies, helping with worship at the church, working with children through Compassion International, and we visited a children’s home (Por Los Ñiños) in Olancho for 4 days and had a blast with the kids there
Favorite new skills learned: the art of removing braids from Benitas hair ๐ and how to make perfect rice in a skillet
Best local food: baleadas, of course! Flour tortillas with beans, cheese, sour cream, and whatever else you feel like adding to it!
New friends: Emily, my dear friend and now sister who touched my heart and who I spent everyday with in the kitchen! Also, the Mejia family– Axel, Alejandra and Alexander. Not to mention the boys at Por los Ñiños– Selvin, Alejandro and Juancito.
How I saw God working: Through my teammates and through the ministry I was able to participate in this month, the Lord revealed to me more and more truth about who I am in Christ and what my purpose on this earth is– to love Him, and to love others.. a simple truth I had heard hundreds of time, but only this month did I come to a deeper understanding of how I am to live this out in my life. I saw God working through the loving kindness and humility of our host, Moises, who is one of the most incredible men I’ve ever met. His gentle boldness and tender heart and compassion for others has changed my heart and my life.
Favorite adventurous outing: exploring caves in Olancho!
My Honduran heroe: brother Prospero– a 97 year old man from the church who always spoke truth and light into my life and told me the same stories over and over again with such joy. Even through the many hardships and terrors he has experienced, he knows that his God is bigger and that he is loved beyond what he could ever imagine by a wonderful, magnificent, all-knowing and all-powerful God and he makes sure that he tells everyone he meets.
What I missed from home: Two weddings of my close friends.. Lisa and Anthony, and Josh and Kayla. Congratulations my dear friends! Also, my niece, Ava’s, 1st bday, as well as my dads and step-mom, Kathleen… Feliz Cumpleanos!
What was hard: living with cockroaches, only having running water twice a week, having to be in by 7pm every night for safety reasons, and only having such a short time with so many wonderful people!
What was good: a great month of friendships, learning and lots of great food! ๐
