I've been known to make a few far fetched analogies, but I just can't help it. I really like similes and metaphors. I mean, if Forrest Gump can compare life to a box full of chocolate candies, then I can successfully compare life to an occupation like fishing, right? Wait, that's already been done. Jesus asked us and his disciples to become 'fishers of men'. Not fishermen, but fishers of men. Which is good, because I really don't want to sit in a boat all day and get sunburned. Actually I do like fishing. To an extent. That extent being approximately 10 minutes. Fishing for men is much more exciting! And being a fisher of men (could I call that a menman?) makes me a Goer. This is basically a Christian term for someone who goes out into the world to spread the Gospel. (11 countries to be exact, for me and my squad anyway.)
So what if you're not a goer? Maybe you don't like to travel or ride in planes and talk to strangers about something as controversial as Christianity. Maybe you're unable to be a goer because of physical condition or disability. Are you just out of the picture? God can't use you? Oh no my friend, you are called to be a Sender. This simply means that you help the Goers go. You could fund their travels, provide them with cultural study material, or commit to praying for them.
Let's add an analogy to the mix, and since we already brought up fishing, let's stick with it. Let's say you live in a town in Alaska near a large body of water. You winters are hard and your townspeople get hungry. Hmm, what to do? I know! Provide fish for them to eat! So you go out on your little boat and start fishing. Unfortunately you weren't blessed with patience, and you left your sunscreen on your patio. You decide fishing isn't for you. You row back to the dock and forget about going after the fish, thus making the determination that you're not meant to be a Goer in this capacity. However, you know of two brothers who love fishing! They just don't have a boat. And just like that, in a moment of brilliance, you decide they should take your boat out. Voila! You are now a Sender and your town is fed.
Now what if you're a Christian and you're doing neither? Well you had better get to work! God's word clearly calls us to be active. We don't just pray for salvation then go into standby mode until death separates us. We Go, and we Send. And what about if you're not a believer? Then a Sender should be sending a Goer your way pretty soon 😉
