Here are some fun facts about Africa. The transportation and the food are the most unique. Between these two categories you will want to either laugh or cry.
Transportation
Bus:
-The aisle’s and chairs are about � the width of an average
person.
-The public bus is also used as a school bus for children to
stand in the aisle and ride for free as long as they aren’t occupying a seat.
-Extra luggage get’s chucked on top, including bicycles that
are loaded while moving.
-Bathroom stops are every 5-8 hours and often in the middle
of nowhere, anywhere outside the bus.
-Food is offered for sale at your window or on the bus in the aisle as you stop along
the way.
-You get serious air time where you often hit your head on
the potholed roads.
-Pavement is a luxury.
-Inches of dust will cover your entire body.
Dala Dala’s (Vans)
-If all of the seats are taken, you can fit at least 3 times
that many more people inside and hanging outside.
-Stranger’s will place their children on your lap if you are
fortunate enough to have a seat.
Food
Rice, Beans,
Potatoes, Ugali, Chipati and Matoke. Your African Staples. Three meals a
day you will find at least two or three of these foods. All of them at supper.
Rice- white. Locals eat giant heaps of it each meal.
Beans- of all shapes and sizes. The most common are like
kidney beans.
Potatoes- fried whole, fried chips, mashed at least once a
day.
Ugali- biggest local staple. cornmeal cooked into a solid. similar
to corn gritz.
Chapti- fried flatbread. Good as a tortilla, scoop, rolled
with sugar.
Matoke- Steamed banana. Uganda has more bananas than people.
Special dishes
Spiced Rice- white rice with cloves, ginger, nutmeg and
more…
Meat-chicken on the bone, feet included (toenails too), goat
on the bone, beef rare on special occasions there is fish!
Greens-steamed spinach, occasional fresh greens,
cabbage/slaw
Fruit-bananas, pineapple, passion fruit, pawpaw (papaya),
oranges, lemons, advocado and tomato.
