Think for a moment about what you throw into your garbage can on an average week. Now think about what you put out at your curbside that is waste to you.

Your trash is somebody else’s treasure.

Hungry? Imagine scavenging for food at your local dump. Oh yes, and it’s in your backyard. I’m serious. You don’t have enough food to feed to your family so you have to go and get somebody else’s food that was thrown out who knows how long ago, bring it home, heat it back up and serve it to your family.

Need income? Go dump diving in the middle of the night to get the pick of the rubbish. They gather all of the plastic bottles to sell to the local junk shop that will re-sell them, a different version of recycling. Hey, it’s more work than most can get here and it’s in their backyards.

Need to patch your roof? Try tarps and tires. The resourcefulness of people in this village is amazing. Once you get past the horrible smell, you can dig to your hearts content to find just about anything you need.

And this is how they survive. God has found favor in this village by the dump to keep them healthy and full of hope in these living conditions.

And we gripe about the heat, the food that upsets our stomachs, the warm filtered mineral water. Humbling. I will eat all of the fish heads they serve me with complete honest desire to enjoy it with all of my heart…and be thankful that I got anything to eat at all today.

You really can make the most out of any situation, no matter how bad it may seem.
