I’ll give you a clue: It’s not what you do.
So what is your identity?
Let’s say you are a “soccer player” what happens if you
break your leg and can never play again…who are you?
Let’s say you are a “wealthy person” what happens if you
lose all your money? what is your identity then?
You ARE a
child of God. He just wants you back. He created you and loves you. He just
wants you back.
During MANistry, all the men would play soccer in the
evenings and the one night I was doing pretty poorly. I kicked the ball and it
went way over the goal, and I felt bad. But then the Lord said, “Why do you
feel bad? Is being a soccer player part of your identity?” WOW! Yeah it was. So
if “soccer player” is NOT part of my identity, then I will not get upset if I mess
up. You can look at that for any situation: are you upset if you don’t “perform”
like you think you should? Then it’s probably because it’s part of your
identity.
Even being a “pastor” or whatever ministry you are being
called to do, if that is part of your identity, what happens if the Lord takes
that “position” or ministry away from you? Those position titles might also
become something we feel proud of or cling to, which is not bringing life.
Like, me wanting to build a children’s village, is that part of my identity? What
about “lunchbox boy”…is that part of my identity? It better not be. Remember: you are NOT
what you do! think about that: you are not what you do. You…ARE NOT…what
you do. again: YOU ARE NOT what you do.
The cool thing is, when you are a child of God, there is nothing you can
do to mess up, because there is ALWAYS grace and
forgiveness from the Lord. We are ALL sons
and daughters of the living God.
