A Muzungu is a white person or a westerner, also known as people of the watch. This is what African people call us. Sometimes, it can get a bit aggravating being called a Muzungu all the time… and I mean all the time. The little kids will see us and say “Muzungu, Muzungu, how are you?” That is probably the only English words that they know and they will ask it all the time. Being a Muzungu also has its perks. At times, I feel like a celebrity walking through the streets of Africa. We get a lot of attention from the people.
When I left for the race, I had a few things on my bucket list that I wanted to do while abroad. One of them was going to a soccer game. I have always seen games on TV and the games always seem so exciting to be at. Jonathon and I got the opportunity to go to a game today. We got to the stadium and asked about where we could buy tickets. We were directed to the gate to buy our tickets. We paid 1,000 Rwandan franks, which accumulates to $1.50. We walked in the stadium and we found some better seats. So we found this man and asked him, about how we could get to those seats? He called us visitors and took us to the best seats in the house for no extra charge. This is when being a Muzungu is great. We got to the seats and started watching the game. It was so fun. It was everything that I thought it would be. The fans were going crazy when the home team scored. We had so much fun and it will be an adventure I will never forget.
