I was doing some praying and hanging out with Christ yesterday and He reminded me of what my life is all about. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus says love the Lord your God with all of you, and love others as yourself. And throughout the gospels and Jesus’ teachings, He commands us as His disciples to serve others. What Jesus was clarifying for me yesterday was that God wants us to love Him by believing in Him and serving others. To love Him means to serve others. God can take care of His own, but He commissions us to serve His people. We need to take action in our faith and serve others in every way we possibly can. We can’t be spending all our time locking ourselves away in our basements listening to praise music because we’re spending that time focusing on ourselves and God. But we must be radical and put God’s word into action, focusing on God and others. If we take in God’s word, whether by the Holy Spirit or through His Word, and we don’t do anything with that Word, it would be better for us to throw His word down the sink. But His Word is Holy and complete through our actions.
Take action and do God’s Word. Don’t just sit on your couch or in your pew and think that is what God designed for His people. Look around you and you will see many people (God’s creation) hurting and crying out for help from God, and His answer to all the shouts is you.
On a side note, I started reading Shane Claiborne’s The Irresistible Revolution. Amazing. I’m only a few chapters into it, but I know God is saying many good things through what is written on those pages. Shane came to Messiah during the first or second month of my freshman year and God really opened a new world to me. My life was changed and my worldview was transformed through the stories and experiences Shane described. God reminded me that a life in service to Him is not some glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, nor is it some boring 9-5 job that I’ll have to be in for the rest of my life. It is a relationship with Him. He is not only my Father and my King, but He is my Brother, serving right next to me. He requires me to give myself up so that others may have life.
Sorry this was kind of a rant, but I figured I would throw this out on the table. Thanks for reading.
