So I returned from Training camp on Thursday and it’s Sunday. I’m still trying to wrap my head around what exactly happened and how to explain it to people who haven’t experienced it.
What I’ve come up with is that I can’t. I can’t explain it too some one who’s never been there and I can’t sum it up into a couple of words or sentences.
I spent 10 days in the sun with 52 people sweating for Jesus. I learned about my squad mates and myself. I met the team that will be behind us every step of the way and I drank way more water than I ever thought possible.
We went through multiple field scenarios each one representing something that has happened on the field. We ate food that we will probably encounter on the field and ate it in a style way differently than you would here in America.
Now as I sit on my comfortable bed, in my air conditioned house, with electricity instead of longing to be home I long to be back with those crazy kids in the woods.
No one really cared how many bucket showers you had. We all smelled like a mixture of sweat, bug spray, and sunscreen. We all looked a little disheveled and probably wearing the same clothes from yesterday.
We became family in those 10 short days. I am so excited to travel the world with these guys come September.
So here’s a list of 11 tidbits from training camp:
1) I slept in a tent, a hammock, on a tile floor, on a concrete floor and probably some other places.
2) I ate food from several different cultures.
3) I did not use a regular toilet for at least 4 days
4) I didn’t drink a Dr pepper or coke of any kind for 8 days
5) I have approximately 10 different tan lines
6) I found my family in the river
7) I will never take ice, showers, beds, pillows, Dr pepper and American food for granted again
8) I went at least 5-6 days without looking at my phone
9) An airporter stuffed inside it’s pouch can be used as extra fluff under your flat pillow
10) I got a new piece of jewelry
11) I saw tangible change in myself and others around me.
I can’t say that I’d jump right back into the woods but I sure do miss my squad now but I’m not going to wish these next few weeks away. I’ve got much to do. I have plenty of friends and family to visit and spend time with.
Love ya X-Squad!
Fundraising update: I’m at 5,875. To leave in September I need to be at $10,000. That leaves 4,125 left to raise. If you or anyone you know can help please click the support me tab above. Every little bit helps! Thank you to all who have donated thus far!
