This blog, my first blog in fact, introduces two characters who accepted starring roles in the story of my life. The author of the story—my Lord and God—carefully knitted the narrative, planned the plot, and stirred the storyline to draw these two players together at the appropriate occasion.

At the moment, the first character enters stage left; it’s the Servant

My mom, the Servant, is undoubtedly a hero in the story. The script often set the scene on Sunday afternoons with this loving, serving lady preparing lunch for our family and ten to twenty of our closest friends. Many times she performed a “five loaves and two fish” type miracle on those days. She always puts others ahead of herself, especially her children. You would imagine washing clothes, cleaning rooms, and preparing meals are among my mother’s favorite things based on the joy with which did them. Her joy, however, did not come from the tasks, but from serving her husband and children. She taught how to serve by doing… by serving. I hope I have learned by watching and receiving. She’s the leading lady in the story.

Now, entering stage right and stretching a devoted, loving arm around the Servant is my dad, the Sacrifice. The portrayal of this man is proof of “greater love has no one than this…” Some fulfill their purpose in life by serving in an occupation, but many do not have this convenience. I have watched my dad live out what I believe to be his purpose in his life. His purpose was not a profession; his purpose was to sacrifice his life for his children. If it is possible to “lay down your life” without stopping your heartbeat, my dad undoubtedly sacrificed his to maintain the heartbeat of our family.

There is no other topic I would prefer for my first blog—Momma and Daddy. From time to time over the next year or so, I will introduce the characters in my story because there is no better way to define myself than by depicting the characters that have defined me.
