Shuck, shuck the corn!

Seriously, though. We had to shuck a lot of corn those couple days. And even then, we didn’t make it through all the shucking.

So Team Anathallo and Boldly Present went on a little adventure together. It started shortly after we ate breakfast on Monday morning (the 27th). We each packed an overnight bag, and we loaded up into the beds of two trucks and that’s where it all began. We drove for about 3 hours, winding through the mountains of northern Thailand. (It was absolutely beautiful!) We ended up in a village about 5 miles away from the Burmese boarder.

We arrived in time for lunch. And right after lunch, we went to the corn field to start picking. Let me tell you: there was a lot of corn.

There was all kinds of other types of vegetation around the corn, so we had to climb through it all in order to pick the corn.

Monday’s picking was a little short -lived. We all picked, yes. But then we all kinda got tired from the sun. So we picked about 30% of the field. And then we started shucking. There was so much corn to shuck!

Anyway. Tuesday (the 28th) we all just picked the field for 3.5 hours. An we were able to finish the whole field! Thank The Lord! It was a lot of work, but if felt so good to get it all picked.

In the process of picking that day I freaked out. Because hiding in one of the ears of corn was a field mouse. I saw it’s nest, but I wasn’t exactly sure what it was…so I, having a spirit of adventure in me that day, decided to check it out and see what it was. The thing jumped out at me, and scurried away on the ground. Oh. My. Lanta. I squealed like a little girl. And everyone in the field heard it.

Other than that little incident, it all went really well.

I really enjoyed being out in the field and picking ears of corn.

We went back to the house we were staying in, had lunch. And then we spent about two hours or so shucking bags of corn.

I wish we could have spent more time shucking, because they still had SO MANY bags left (at least 20).

At about 3:30 we left the village and started to make our way back to Chiang Mai. It felt like a really long drive, but again, the beauty of the area struck me. Our Creator is so awesome!

It was such a great couple days! And it was so nice to have that little change of pace!

You may be wondering why we would go pick and shuck corn. Well, I would love to tell you.

Our contact has a friend who just adopted a handful of kids. They use the money they make from selling the corn to help with food costs and rent costs for a couple months. Usually it takes them a week-two weeks to harvest the corn and then shuck it all. So hopefully, we sped up the process a little bit.

It was a joy to spend some time with her children and love on them a bit as well.

So. That’s the story of Boldly Present and Anathallo’s corn picking adventure.
