A few weeks ago, as Christmas season was just getting started, a friend reminded me of a simple fact that rang in my ears:
"Jesus was a baby."
and it was as if I was hearing this for the very first time.
I pictured Jesus, not as God, but as a small child asking me to help him get something down from the cupboard because he couldn't reach. It was interesting to imagine the Creator of the Universe asking me to help him instead of the other way around. For a minute it almost didn't make sense … but then I understood, just a little better what Christians mean when we say that,
"Jesus understands what you are going through, because He was human."
I think after hearing that phrase so many times and saying it as well,
I forgot that human also means child, also means baby.

This is Henry, He's a baby (Isn't he precious?), just like
Jesus was a baby.
(Is this making sense?)
He needed someone to help him do everything.
Someone to help him eat.
Someone to rock him to sleep.
Someone to play with him.
and someone to take care of him when he was sick.
He needed someone to teach him things.
Like how to walk,
How to color inside the lines,
and how to tie his shoes.
Jesus was a child, in the same way that I am a child of God.
I need Him to help me do everything, too.
I need him to provide for all my needs.
I need him to rock me to sleep at night.
I need Him to love me.
I need him to take care of me.
I need him to teach me.
I need him to help me figure out how to do things.
And some days, I even need Him to help me walk.
And all of a sudden with this simple revelation, depending on God just got that much easier, because I realized how much God understands me, not because He is the Creator of the Universe and He just happends to know and understand everything (which He does).
But God understands me, because He was a child, just like I am His child
& just as I hope you are His child as well.
So this Christmas, as you celebrate the holidays with friends & family, remember:
Jesus was a little baby,
in every sense of the word.
Merry Christmas!
