Hello Family and Friends!
We got to Honduras safely on Saturday evening and have had an incredible first two days. We are staying at Zion’s Gate, a property run by a man named Tony and his wife Nydia. Tony moved here five years ago from the United States, and now has six street kids living with him and his wife in their home. He is involved in so much outreach to street kids here, and is always inviting them to come to his property, even if it is just for the day.
We talked through our schedule for the month (which, yahoo we have a schedule! What an incredible feeling after having no clue what we were going to be doing in ten minutes ahead while we were in El Salvador). The whole squad is together, but we will be working in teams of two, doing something different each week. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we will be working on the streets, in schools and in orphanages- we’ll know more about these when we split into teams and know where we will be going when.
On Fridays, we will be going to what is called “INFA”. It is a government program that drives around the cities and pulls teens off the streets if they are “dangerous” in any way. It isn’t exactly a prison, but they are being held there against their will. They can be held there anywhere from one to six months. We will be the first World Race squad, and the very first group ever, that is being allowed to go into INFA to work with the teens. Tony said he doesn’t really have expectations yet, doesn’t know what it will look like- but we will go armed with music, art, games, etc. and just try to make the best of the time the teens are required to spend in this place.
On Saturdays, we will be going to different colonies around Tegucigalpa, taking over their soccer fields, and just invading their community. They don’t know we are coming, but Tony is sure people will start showing up (if for no other reason that gringos are interesting, and fun to laugh at). We will play games, sing, draw, talk to anyone who shows up and maybe even give a few sermons if there is anyone willing to listen.
Sundays are church days. Wednesdays are off days.
This is probably the best description of the month ahead we will ever have. How exciting!
Now for a little something extra. This week, our first week here, was going to be spent painting the main building on the property. However, last week the water supply malfunctioned, and they had to spend money to replace it, no longer being able to buy paint for the project this week. The paint will cost about $150 dollars to do the inside only- about $250 to do the inside and outside. If anyone is interested in sponsoring this project (in whole or in part), send me an e-mail (
[email protected]) and let me know! We would love to bless their ministry in this way.
P.S. It’s cold! Thank goodness Mrs. Weible gave me a second long sleeve shirt the day before I left. 🙂
