You know you’re in Cambodia when…
- You use two kinds of currency to pay for things (American dollars and Cambodian riel).
- It is acceptable for motorcycles to drive on the side walk in order to make it through the light as well as go the wrong way on the street to avoid the light.
- You take a tuk-tuk to get where you need to go.
- Women and girls wear pajamas as their outfit for the day.
- People are dressed in flannel and hoodies when it is 70 degrees out because it is their coldest month.
- The majority of people drives motorcycles or ride bikes.
- There are very few middle-aged people (Cambodia faced genocide in the 1970s where the Kom Pot regime killed anyone who was educated. This includes people who simply looked like they were educated (i.e. if you wore glasses) and people from other countries. Cambodia is still recovering from this tragedy).
- When you are invited to an event a cash offering is expected.
- Paths that are meant for a bike are taken over by tractors and vans.
- Bananas have an interesting texture, similar to clay, but they still taste like bananas.
- People have houses on stilts and run their businesses underneath them.
