What I love about this month, and the people we work with, is that you never know what is coming next! They are so well connected within and even outside the Khlong Toey slum community that we are always being exposed to more creative ways people are reaching out and changing lives here in this beautiful country.
This morning we got the opportunity to spend time with a pr
eschool class for kids with light special needs. I have been in many classrooms over the past few months, and let me tell you, these kids have the most energy and joy I have seen thus far! It’s amazing and humbling and challenging all rolled into one. We spent our time singing songs, playing games, and getting the kids as engaged and unafraid of forangs (foreigners) as we could.
Afterwards, we g
ot to tour the associated organization call
ed BaanChivitMa, which translates to “A Home for New Life”. Here we learned that this staff of ten diligent workers support young, mentally challenged women and children by enabling them to have work that grows their life skills. Through cleaning, cooking, making crafts, and more, the staff here keeps these women off the streets and out of the massive sex industry here in Bangkok.
The BaanChivitMa Foundation is completely unaffiliated with Step Ahead. However, I just wanted to share with you all yet another group of people that have dedicated their lives to empowering and sustaining those less fortunate. Our team is excited to have been invited back to teach cooking lessons, help out, and spend time with the young women there later on this month. So fun!
