So I have some good news and some bad news. Where to start?
Bad New Bears
Okay, we’ll address the depressing stuff first: my watch is no longer of value. How does that happen, you ask? Well it all started with a Wal-Mart purchase. Hard to turn down 9.99USD! I got this watch right before leaving the US, and it has successfully made it through four solid months on the race. Then there was Kathmandu.
This proved to be too much for my spunky little accessory, and the face started to rip away from the band. Feeling thrifty, I decided to remedy this situation with super glue. I’ll tell you right now I completely underestimated just how super this glue really is. I thought the worst of my mess was accidently gluing my fingers together, or maybe sealing my tongue to my lip – but no, no. It got worse. That tricky, sticky glue snuck into one of my watch’s side buttons, naturally the one responsible for setting the time, quickly putting an end to its functionality. Not cool. This might not have been such a problem if I stayed in the same time zone for more than 30 days, but such is not the case and my watch now reads 2hours and 45 minutes ahead of Kenyan time.
The Good Stuff
Ready for the good news? Me, too. Since I quickly tired of doing the math necessary to compute an accurate reading of the time, the watch got ditched. Guess what it left behind??? A tan line. Yeah. Believe it. This fair-skinned girl has proof of a litta bitta color : ).
So I share all this just to give you a feel of how I’m living life this month. They say Kenya’s live on “African time”, which is ruled not by the first and second hand of a watch but by the less specific, internal clock. The goal is to see how long I can hang with this practice before totally losing it…so far so good!
A Look Ahead
Our ministry this month is with Pastor Mary and her husband Pastor Daniel’s church. Talk about a power couple. We had our first service with them last Sunday and it was a hoot to worship a little crazy with them and witness firsthand the passion their congregation has for the Lord. This month we will be working with internally displaced people in and around Nakuru, Kenya, and doing life with Momma Mary and her family.
Team Changes!
Oh and on a side note – you should also know that I have a new team! Just when you thought things were settling down, I know. We added two guys to our team of five, making us now seven (three guys and four girls). One of the guys, Josh, you might remember from my original team, and the other newbie is Frank. Check ‘em out! We’re stoked for the dynamic these two bring to our team, which only adds to the adventure of the coming months I’m sure, and can’t wait to tell you all about it.
